February 23 marks the birthday of Emperor Naruhito, the 126th generation since the first Emperor Jimmu. With a history spanning over 2,600 years, the longevity of the imperial line is attributed to its role in Japan. Here, the Emperor, serving as the Ceremonial Head, prays for the happiness and peace of the people. We believe that if there is a common teaching among the world's religions, it is the spirit of forgiveness and respect for each other's differences. During the 'World Peace Prayer in Japan,' adherents of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam come together to pray for lasting peace in the world on the Emperor's Birthday. This transcends sectarianism and nationality. KIGO, commonly known as “Calligraphy Performance” performed by a Calligrapher in front of an audience, is a traditional Japanese Spiritual Culture similar to Zen. When the calligrapher writes a word, phrase or wish chosen from their heart on a large paper, the audience’s attention gathers towards the Calligrapher’s appearance and to the tip of their brush. Just like a conductor of an orchestra putting together a symphony, a Calligrapher makes everyone’s feelings come together, which strengthens the feelings of prayer. |
